What is Marriage & Family Therapy?

Writer: Allison VigilAllison Vigil

Marriage and family therapy is a therapeutic method that not only looks at the family unit, but also looks at the individual and how they function within the family. Marriage and Family Therapists realize that an individual is embedded in a family and, if emotionally difficult circumstances exist, a vicious cycle could potentially ensue. An MFT works diligently to disrupt this cycle and help create a healthier environment.

Marriage and Family Therapists have the ability to address a number of different concerns within your unique and intricate family system. Because MFTs have the ability to see not only individuals, but also multiple family members, they are better able to address a wide range of problems. MFTs are able to assist individuals coping with concerns like anxiety, depression, marital problems, adult-child parenting issues and a variety of additional psychological problems.

What is a Marriage and Family Therapist?

A marriage and family therapist is a professional who is trained in mental health, with an emphasis in family systems. This individual is licensed to diagnose and treat various mental health disorders and help individuals function contextually within a couple, family or marital system.

In order for an MFT to be licensed, they must have graduate training, which includes a master’s degree or doctoral degree in a family services field, and they must have at least two years of experience as a clinical counselor.

Why Should You Use a Marriage and Family Therapist?

Clients regularly note high satisfaction when working with Marriage and Family Therapists. Clients routinely report improvement in their work productivity, family relationships, overall health and general involvement in the community. After clients receive treatment, many clients report feeling improvement in their emotional health in addition to an improvement in their general health. While it is ultimately up to the client to do the work, an MFT will help guide them through the process of change.
